Find all of the information we currently have on the technical aspects of the thickness applications and uses of the Crackle products here.

Idea - use a penny in the minimum thickness application videos...

An important general rule to follow: When applying Rough Cracking and Smooth Cracking Textures: If you go thick, you don’t need size. If you use size, don’t apply thick. See: Crackle: Minimum and Maximum Thicknesses.

Minimum Thickness

Here is a gallery of images of Minimum Thickness with and without size for each of the Crackle Products:

Transparent Cracking Glaze: a thin brush stroke or 240 sq. ft/gallon or 6 mil

Smooth Cracking Texture and Rough Cracking Texture: 144 sq. ft/gallon or 10 mil thicknesses

Troweled on thin enough to see through the Texture. On left: no Crackle Size below Smooth Cracking Texture; on right: one rolled coat of Crackle Size below application
Troweled on thin enough to see through the Texture. On left: no Crackle Size below Rough Cracking Texture and no cracks are visible; on right: one rolled coat of Crackle Size below application however, this application is too thin to produce cracks

Maximum Thickness

Notes on Maximum Thicknesses and the use of Crackle Size (include a red/green chart):

  • Cracking Size magnifies the differences between the thicknesses and sheens of the basepaints used beneath the Crackle products.
  • Cracking Size over higher gloss sheens will create a hold out of pattern meaning larger platelets with not as many smaller cracks visible.
  • Review Crackle Surface Preparation and Protection for further recommendations on choice of base paint, sheen for surface preparation.

Here is a gallery of images of Maximum Thickness with and without size for each of the Crackle Products:

Rough Cracking Texture The maximum thickness recommended is 175 ml or 8 sq. ft/gallon (about the thickness of ), apply this thickness only over Flat or Eggshell sheens and do not use Cracking Size underneath this thickness.

175 mil thickness On left: no Crackle Size below Rough Cracking Texture; on right: one rolled coat of Crackle Size below application
250 mil thickness of Rough Cracking Texture without (left) and with(right) Cracking Size

An interesting Note:

Use two coats of size and an application of 75 ml(about the thickness of ) of Rough Cracking Texture to create a similar effect of one coat of Rough Cracking Texture at 175 ml(about the thickness of ):

Maximum thickness of Rough Cracking Texture at 175 ml without Cracking Size
75 ml thickness of Rough Cracking Texture with two coats of Cracking Size

The difference in the material cost of these two applications is:

Maximum thickness of Rough Cracking Texture at 175 ml(about the thickness of ) without Cracking Size =

75 ml(about the thickness of ) thickness of Rough Cracking Texture with two coats of Cracking Size =

Smooth Cracking Texture

The maximum thickness recommended is 150 ml, apply this thickness only over Flat or Eggshell sheens.

Maximum thickness of Smooth Cracking Texture without Cracking Size

Transparent Cracking Glaze

The maximum thickness is created by applying it with a brush, at the maximum thickness (about the thickness of ), the Transparent Cracking Glaze will sag.

29 sq. ft/gallon or 50 mil

On left: no Crackle Size below Transparent Cracking Glaze; on right: one rolled coat of Crackle Size below application
