Crackle: Minimum and Maximum Thicknesses

From PROCEED SYSTEM Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Each Crackle product has a minimum thickness required in order to make the cracks visible. If after applying untinted crackle products and no cracks are visible, there most likely is not enough material on the surface in order to allow it to crack.

  • When applying Rough Cracking and Smooth Cracking Textures:
    • If you apply them thick, you don’t need size.
    • The textures will produce large cracks on their own.
    • If you use size, don’t apply them thick.
    • Slumping may occur if thick applications of the Cracking Textures are applied over the Crackle Size.

Minimum Thickness

Here is a gallery of images of Minimum Thickness with and without size for each of the Crackle Products:

Transparent Cracking Glaze:

A thin brushstroke or 240 sq. ft/gallon or 6 mil (a sheet of copy paper is about 4 mil thick, see Relative Thickness).

240 sq. ft./gallon (Thin brush stroke or 6 mil. thickness) = $0.33 per sq. foot

Smooth Cracking Texture and Rough Cracking Texture

Smooth Cracking Texture

144 sq. ft/gallon or 10 mil thicknesses (premium glossy photo paper is 10 mil, see Relative Thickness)

144 sq. ft./gallon (10 mil. thickness) = $0.51 per sq. foot

Rough Cracking Texture

18.5 sq. ft./gallon (75 mil. thickness, must have size) = $3.97 per sq. foot

Maximum Thickness

Crackle Size:

    • Cracking Size magnifies the differences between the thicknesses and sheens of the basepaints used beneath the Crackle products.
    • Cracking Size over higher gloss sheens will create a hold out of pattern meaning larger platelets with not as many smaller cracks visible.
    • Review Crackle Surface Preparation and Protection for further recommendations on choice of base paint, sheen for surface preparation.

Rough Cracking Texture

Here is a gallery of images of Maximum Thickness with and without size for each of the Crackle Products: The maximum thickness for Rough Cracking Texture recommended is 175 mil or 8 sq. ft/gallon (about the Relative Thickness of 3 pennies), apply this thickness only over Flat or Eggshell sheens and do not use Cracking Size underneath this thickness.

8 sq. ft./gallon (175 mil. thickness, no size required) = $9.19 per sq. foot

An interesting Note: Use two coats of size and an application of 75 mil (about the Relative Thickness of a nickel) of Rough Cracking Texture to create a similar effect of one coat of Rough Cracking Texture at 175 mil (about the Relative Thickness of 3 pennies):

The difference in the material cost of these two applications is: Maximum thickness of Rough Cracking Texture at 175 mil (about the Relative Thickness of 3 pennies) without Cracking Size. 75 mil (about the Relative Thickness of a nickel) thickness of Rough Cracking Texture with two coats of Cracking Size.

Smooth Cracking Texture

The maximum thickness for Smooth Cracking Texture recommended is 150 mil (an 1/8" = 125 mil), apply this thickness only over Flat or Eggshell sheens.

9.5 sq. ft./gallon (150 mil. thickness) = $7.68 per sq. foot

Transparent Cracking Glaze

The maximum thickness for Transparent Cracking Glaze is created by applying it with a brush, at the maximum thickness 29 sq. ft/gallon or 50 mil (about the Relative Thickness of a penny), the Transparent Cracking Glaze will sag.

29 sq. ft./gallon (Thick brush stroke or 50 mil. thickness) = $2.71 per sq. foot
